17th International Jewelry Tokyo 2006 was held in January. According pearl companies which had booth in there, sales amount of pearl items were up. Particularly demand of high quality Akoya pearls were up. The problem is that the quantity of high quality Akoya pearl is short in recent years and the price of material is going up this year.

South seas pearls and Tahitian pearls were favorable, and pearl export from Japan in 2005 was 28800000000 yen of 8.0% of previous year ratio up in the amount of money by statistics on Japanese trade. Whole market share in the one by the pearls became 59.3% of South sea pearls and Tahitian pearls, 37.7% of Akoya pearls.

They are going to buy pearl firm area, so many people predict that production of Chinese pearls are going down next few years. Some people predict that total amount would be decrease about more than 30%.

The meeting of Japan Pearl Exporters' Association and The Cultured Pearl Association of America was held in Kobe last month. The Cultured Pearl Association of America asked Japan to helping about promotion of pearls as many kind of pamphlet for Jewelry show in U.S.A. They discussed about this subject seriously and problem is that Japanese side don't have enough budget in recent years.

Big typhoon came to Japan this month and she attacked some pearl farm area. However most of pearl farms didn't have big damage. This typhoon brought heavy rain and it made temperature of sea lower. This things made good for pearl cultivation.

A rainfall in June of this year is small in Akoya pearl farm area. Nutrition supplies from the rainwater decrease. A bad influence for the culture of Akoya pearl goes for this thing. Though a heavy rain fell in July, there are still a few from the annual average rainfall. Bad influences to the future Akoya pearl culture are the conditions which aren't avoided.

9th"International Jewellery KOBE" was held May 19 to 21th. Number of over sea buyer were same as last year. They were buying stable. Competition of price became harder in South Sea Pearls and Tahitian Pearls. High quality of Akoya pearls had strong demand, however there were not enough quantity of them.

The first "Jewelry coordinator examination" is held in four principal cities in Japan on August 24.
Auspices are "Japanese Jewelry Society". There is a grade with the first rank, the second rank, the third rank. An examination application is June 1 to 24. Ask about the information to the Japanese Jewelry Society.

A Japanese pearl hall was registered in the cultural properties building.
The Japanese pearl hall of Kobe was added in that though a cultural council submitted it to the sentence department science Cabinet minister to register 197 buildings agreed officially in the same council cultural properties sectional meeting held on March 18 as a cultural properties building, too.
It is given to it that it is "the work which becomes the starting point of building extant of Hyogo Prefecture inside" as a reason.

Pearl dealer in New York visited us this week. They went to Hong Kong show first, then they came to Kobe. According to them, there were many visitors and booth, however buying mind was not strong. South Sea loose pearls were popular this time. There are demands for high quality merchandise or commercial merchandise in New York. Medium range merchandise doesn't move much. The quality control of high quality is too strict and it is difficult to fill the order now. They said that somebody said "Pearl would be good this year.", however they don't feel it much so far.

New crop auction is almost over now. Price keeps strong until end. Consumer mind is still weak in Japan and over sea and manufactures are not sure that they can make profit from new crop. Total quantities were short this season.

According statistics on Japanese trade, the unit price for U.S.A. was raised for the pearl export in August 2004. 10.5% raised in Akoya pearls and 8.3% raised in South Sea and Black Tahitian pearls. These situation can be thought demand for the high quality merchandises to rise in U.S.A.

"Japan Jewelry Fair 2004" was held Sept. 2nd to 4th at Tokyo big site. It is too early to prepare the merchandise for Christmas sales for buyers. South Sea pearls and Tahitian Black Pearls were selling stable. High quality merchandise and low price range merchandise were popular in Akoya pearls. Also demand of Natural color Akoya pearls were strong.

That influence seems to appear in the pearl farm as well though this summer was the best intense heat in observation history in Japan. Death of oyster, dropping nucleus from oyster, red tide damage are usually the influences of the intense heat. There are some dealers who worked on the countermeasure recently even of that, too, and it seems that stopped the influence of the intense heat to a minimum. Because it has the possibility that it lasts every year in the future as well, the intense heat countermeasure of the pearl culture is an important subject as for the intense heat.

8th"International Jewellery KOBE" was held May 13 to 15th. Sales of pearls were good, because number of over sea buyers were increased compared with last year. Sales of South Sea Pearls and Black Pearls were good. Also high quality range and commercial range of Akoya pearls were popular too. However medium range of Akoya pearls were slow this time.

Italian buyer came to Kobe last week. They haven't come to Kobe this two years and are looking for fine quality merchandises this time. There are requirements for commercial goods, however there are competition with Chinese Akoya and Fresh water pearls. There are strong demand for fine quality Japanese Akoya pearls, however problem is price.

Hong Kong International Jewellery Show was held Mar. 2nd to 5th. Many buyers were back to Hong Kong this time, because Iraq war and SARS problem are over. South Sea Pearls are popular and Asian buyers are active this time. US dollar is getting weak now but Euro keep strong. So we expect that European buyers would be more active this season.

Pearl export from Japan in 2003 decreased in comparison with the previous year in the quantity 14.8%, and they decreased in the amount of money 27.1% by statistics on Japanese trade. Iraqi war and a SARS problem are big causes. Because both problems have the final breath tentatively and it becomes soft recently, a strong yen base is expected export to U.S.A. whose Christmas sales was good this year, too.

"International Pearl Auction" was held Nov. 13th and 14th. We attended it 14th in the afternoon. There were not much over sea buyers, because of terrorism and slow economic situation. There are some valuable merchandises. Fine quality goods were stable price.

Acceding to German buyer who came to Kobe recently, the whole German economy is very bad, and it is said that that influence appears in the jewelry business world as well. He said the whole price rose after Euro introduction and people don't spend money. A light sign can't be seen even in November which was before the Christmas at the time of the present, and economy recovery seems still to take time.

Good quality Japanese Akoya pearls are popular for this Christmas season in Europe. Because Euro is strong against Japanese Yen now and in general, good quality Japanese Akoya pearls have better luster than freshwater pearls. However good quality of under 6mm. are very short supply this season.

The movement of the sales of the pearl in U.S.A. is improper as before, and it is said that it doesn't have an idea for the sale of autumn at the time of the present, either. He said that it is the condition which is very hard to run so that a dealer in Hong Kong of the sales where it has been slow by SARS may make a business to the buyer's client directly.

The auction of the south seas pearl and Tahitian black pearl was held in Kobe in June. Though it was usually held in Hong Kong, it became a meeting place change with the SARS problem in Kobe. Many buyers participated, and the importance of "Pearl City Kobe" was realized again.

Three companies in Hong Kong where it was in Japan in advance participated after all, and it didn't participate from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan. A depression occurred at the same time with SARS problem, and it seemed that there were a few visitors, too.

"A piece of Pearl" as NPO(Nonprofit Organization) is made this March by a dealer related to the pearl. Akoya pearls that it was produced in Japan by a production, circulation dealer in the whole country to approve of the point are collected.
The membership card of "A piece of Pearl" and 1 grain of pearl are delivered to the person who appealed for the fund raising of 1 part 1000yen(about US$9.-) to the citizen and who responded.

It thought about the advantage convenience of the overseas buyers, and it was decided that it was made to link with the schedule of other South Sea Aucution. The mother shellfish of about the half died out at the moment at the end of March. Because the water temperature inside "Ago"(Mie prefecture) bay after a New Year beginsthe was unusual situation of lowness of lasted for several years .

U.S. market is slow down after terrorist attack in September and it affect to exporting pearl market. U.S. market is number 1 for importing pearls from Japan and share is about 30%. Usually it is buying season for Christmas sales for U.S. pearl importers now, however it looks the market is stopped.

Usually new crop auction starts in December. However there is no auction in December and it will be starting next January. Because temperature of sea is still worm and it might be better to wait until temperature of sea will be going down. Cold water make pearl good luster.

There was second meeting for "renewal for Japan Pearl Exporters' Association" last night. 20 members attended and discuss about how manage Association. Big problem is cost for them. Also some members are resigned Association and they ask to pay back their money invested. It is not small amount. So JPEA may sell their building. JPEA have to discuss more about this problem.
